Movement & Stillness in the Forest

During 2014 we noticed that a group of three boys spent much time running in circles around a ditch and some trees in the forest. Their movements became more complex and refined over the weeks which followed. We began to focus on how children move together, the rules of movement, invitations to move and the traces of their movement.

We also noticed that children responded with much interest to a dead mouse and a dead bird we had found in the woodland and that these finds led them to investigate stillness both in the forest and back in nursery. The experiences led the children on to observing sleeping babies and exploring stillness with their bodies.

This is a short film by Jessica Wild, a filmmaker who worked as an Atelierista for Reflections and Deb Wilenski, our Pedagogical Advisor who were inspired by these observations.
